1.35 Newmarket: Our Verdict
Our racing team weigh up the best bets in the Sky Bet Money Back race on Friday – the 1.35 at Newmarket.
Mrs Danvers is the one to beat in the Cornwallis Stakes
Ian Ogg – Mrs Danvers
A smart filly won this last year in Quiet Reflection and Mrs Danvers certainly deserves to respect as she bids to follow in her steps and those of stablemate Royal Razalma in 2014. This looks a deeper race than the Listed contest she won at Newbury last time but the results of the last two renewals as well as last weekend's Prix de l'Abbaye highlight what an advantage the fillies' allowance can be in these sprints where there perhaps isn't a great deal between the runners. The undulations of Newmarket represent a new test but she handled Lingfield well enough on debut and I think this versatile and speedy filly can handle this step up in class with aplomb.
Ben Coley – Mrs Danvers
Given that the last couple of renewals of this race have been won by fillies, and that the first of them was trained by Jonathan Portman, there's a pretty clear cut case for Mrs Danvers. She's unbeaten, holds a couple of these on form including Clem Fandango, the other filly with an obvious chance, and there's no telling how good she might be. Last time out the daughter of Hellvelyn produced a career-best to beat Equimou, who went on to finish just behind Afandem and just in front of Prince Of Lir at Newbury. That puts Mrs Danvers right in among the best of these already and she gets the vote under ideal conditions. At bigger prices, Visionary, whose Ascot run looks better now than it did at the time but whose subsequent absence is a worry, is one to keep an eye on but Mrs Danvers should be hard to beat.
