12.05 Cheltenham: Our Verdict
Our racing team weigh up their best bets in the Sky Bet Money Back race on Saturday – the 12.05 at Cheltenham.
Defi Du Seuil is the one to beat
Ben Linfoot – Domperignon Du Lys
Tactically, there's only one bet here isn't there? The Money Back if you're second offer was made for races like this, a nice small-runner field and a virtual match between Defi Du Seuil and DOMPERIGNON DU LYS. The former was impressive at this track last time and looks sure to go off favourite on the back of that, but Nicky Henderson's Domperignon Du Lys was equally smooth when winning up at Newcastle. I'd take any bigger prices about Daryl Jacob's mount, sticking a pony on, safe in the knowledge you're likely to get the £25 back if Defi proves too good, with only Couer de Lion a realistic danger in that regard.
Ben Coley – Domperignon Du Lys
There are tactical approaches to this above and below, each with their own merits, but I'm playing a straight bat and siding with the horse who could offer a bit of value against the jolly. I was really impressed with Domperignon Du Lys at Newcastle and while these are likely to be very different conditions, there is a spot of rain in the forecast and I'm prepared to chance that aspect. Plus, while it would be folly to get hung up on French bumper formlines, he beat a horse called Drive Again into third on his sole start before joining Nicky Henderson. On debut, Drive Again beat Defi Du Seuil. Ipso facto, Domperignon Du Lys is the best horse in this race. And if he isn't we'll have a free bet, at least…
Ian Ogg – Defi Du Seuil
I take Mr Linfoot's point about backing Domperignon Du Lys but Defi Du Seuil looked really good here last time when backed as though he was a really good horse. He lived up to expectations that day and I expect him to do so again. So rather than back Domperignon, I'd back the favourite who can become the fourth odds-on winner of this race in seven years and if he does happen to get chinned, I should (!) get my money back.
