Report: Clonmel, Thursday

Clonmel Oil Chase (Grade 2) 2m4f, 4yo+

THERE was a dramatic finish to Clonmel's feature race of the year as Outlander crashed out at the last when leading, handing victory to Alelchi Inois and Ruby Walsh.

Jockey Bryan Cooper had only just returned to action after fracturing his arm, but happily both he and Outlander were quickly to their feet.

It was an interesting finish in more ways than one, as Outlander was formerly trained by Willie Mullins, the trainer of Alelchi Inois, before owner Michael O'Leary decided to remove 60 horses from Mullins in September.

Had Outlander stayed upright at the last, it looked like he would have been victorious, as although Alelchi Inois was starting to close, he still had a couple of lengths to make up.

Having raced prominently, Outlander was in front at the top of the straight, but he failed to get high enough at the last and came crashing down, leaving the 2-1 favourite to claim an unlikely success from Clarcam.
