Algometer impresses at Newbury

Derby seventh Algometer returned to action for the first time since Epsom with a battling victory over Dartmouth in the Group Three Dubai Duty Free Legacy Cup at Newbury.

Martin Harley struck for home aboard Robin Of Navan from a fairly early stage in the home straight and that turned the contest into quite a test of stamina.

First it was Tashaar who hit the front two furlongs out, but stamina has always looked Algometer's strong suit and Jim Crowley was all the while winding him up for a challenge down the outside.

Taking up the lead just before the furlong-pole, Algometer was taken on by final challenger Dartmouth – who had twice tried to bite his rivals earlier coming off the home turn – but held on well from the Hardwicke Stakes winner, who was giving Algometer 12lb, to score by three-quarters of a length.
