The £100,000 contest on January 7 has been earmarked by trainer Fergal O'Brien as potential recovery mission for the 11-year-old following his second fence fall at Aintree on Saturday.

This year's Scottish National runner-up qualified for the three-mile prize, which is open to horses aged over 10, after running in the third qualifying leg at Newbury back in March.

O'Brien said: "Aintree was disappointing but it was just one of those things. He had such a lovely prep race at Cheltenham. Paul (Moloney) was disappointed.

"He came out of it looking a million dollars, but that is racing for you.

"He won't come out very quickly. We will look, if we get him back in time, at the veterans final at Sandown in January."
