WALDGEIST became the latest in an ever-growing list of Group 1 winners to be sired by Coolmore's supersire Galileo when running out a gutsy winner of the Criterium de Saint-Cloud on Sunday.

The Andre Fabre-trained colt had to overcome interference in his run but when push came to shove he found enough for pressure to draw away from runner-up Best Solution by a length and the land the top-level prize for his owners Gestut Ammerland, Newsells Park Stud and Mrs John Magnier.

Waldgeist is the first foal out of Waldlerche, a Group 3-winning daughter of Monsun whose half-siblings include St Leger winner Masked Marvel and the Listed winner Waldnah.

Waldlerche was bred by Newsells Park and was sold to Crispin de Moubray for €100,000 at the 2010 renewal of the Arqana August Sale.

Even by his own high standards Galileo has enjoyed a phenomenal 2016 campaign, having amassed almost three times more European prize-money than his nearest pursuer, Dubawi.

In winning the Criterium de Saint-Cloud Waldgeist became Galileo's third top-level two-year-old winner in 2016, after Dewhurst hero Churchill and Fillies' Mile scorer Rhododendron.

After the race Waldgeist earned quotes of 16-1 for the 2017 Derby, and given his run style and pedigree he looks to have plenty in his favour with regards the demands of 1m4f around Epsom in early June.
