Ascot: Yanworth grinds out Coral Hurdle victory

Yanworth bests gutsy
Rockerfeller at Ascot By Nick Pulford 2:49PM 19 NOV 2016

Report: Ascot, Saturday

Coral Hurdle (Grade 2) 2m3f, 4yo+

YANWORTH scored a workmanlike victory in the Coral Hurdle, edging ahead of the gallant Lil Rockerfeller in the last 100 yards as Barry Geraghty had to work harder than expected on the odds-on favourite.

The Alan King-trained winner justified odds of 4-5 in the end but it was hardly a decisive success by three-quarters of a length from Lil Rockerfeller (10-1). Garde La Victoire (4-1) was ten lengths back in third, Court Minstrel (25-1) fourth and Zarkandar (4-1) last of the five runners.

Yanworth's performance seemed to point more towards the World Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival rather than the Champion Hurdle. He was cut to 8-1 (from 10) for the World Hurdle by William Hill.

Lil Rockerfeller joined issue with long-time leader Garde La Victoire rounding the home turn and was in front at the second last, with Yanworth his only serious challenger.

Going to the final flight, it was clear Yanworth had a battle on his hands and Lil Rockerfeller still led by a length jumping the last. Gradually, however, Yanworth responded to Geraghty's urgings to grab victory.
