ANDREA ATZENI will be seeking to thwart Aidan O'Brien's Racing Post Trophy ambitions yet again on Saturday, when the jockey will bid for a remarkable fourth successive triumph in the race run on his 'lucky' track.
O'Brien will saddle the Ryan Moore-ridden Yucatan, the even money favourite after heavy support on Wednesday, Finn McCool and The Anvil, but arguably has most to fear from Champagne Stakes winner Rivet, the mount of Atzeni.
O'Brien has won seven editions of the Racing Post Trophy, but since Atzeni recorded the first of his three victories on Kingston Hill in 2013 has had to settle for second spot every time, as the jockey followed up on Elm Park and 33-1 winner Marcel.
"Doncaster has been a very lucky track for me," Atzeni said. "I have won three Racing Post Trophys, two St Legers and had eight winners at this year's Leger meeting.
"I don't know what it is. I have been lucky to ride some nice horses there."
The rider said of big-race mount Rivet, trained by William Haggas and who was fifth in the Dewhurst last time: “He's won there before and could run a big race. I don't think Rivet really handled the track at Newmarket. A flat track will suit him better.”
He added: "Yucatan looks progressive after winning his maiden and taking another step again when he was second to Capri last time. If he improves again he'll be the one to beat, but if he under-performs we're there with a big shout.”
On Thursday night Rivet was general 5-1 second favourite.
