McGrath Estate Agents Metropolitan Handicap (Group 1) 1m4f, 3yo+
SIR JOHN HACKWOOD, a former smart handicapper for Sir Michael Stoute, landed the McGrath Estate Agents Metropolitan Handicap at Randwick on Saturday and has more big prizes on his agenda.
The Sir Percy gelding started his time in Australia with Peter Moody but joined John Thompson earlier this year. The Metropolitan was his first run at the top level and he triumphed over favourite Antonio Guiseppe by a length and a quarter.
"I'm still getting to know him," said Thompson. "Blake [Spriggs, jockey] does know him well and he comes and rides him and has been a big help."
Thompson previously worked for the late Bart Cummings and added: "I remembered Bart telling me that to win a Metropolitan you had to take the horses to Kembla in the week before and give them a gallop so I did that too."
Spriggs said: "To win a Group One race is such a thrill. To do it for [owner] Paul Fudge on this horse is even better.
"I'm hoping this is just the start. Hopefully the horse goes to the Caulfield Cup. We can only dream but at the moment the dream is coming true."

Sydney Airport Flight Stakes (Group 1) 1m, 3yo
Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott landed the Group 1 Flight Stakes on the same card as Global Glamour got the better of 21-20 favourite Yankee Rose.
Ridden by Timothy Clark, Global Glamour made all to prevail by half a length. The win was a ninth for Waterhouse in the race and her first since taking on the licence jointly with Bott earlier this year.
