Australia: Michelle Payne has been dealt a blow after trainer Darren Weir confirmed the history-making jockey has lost the ride on Melbourne Cup winner Prince Of Penzance.

Payne, who became the first female rider to win the Flemington spectacular when partnering the 100-1 shot to victory last year, recently made her comeback from a career-threatening fall and gained her first victory since returning at Coleraine on Sunday.

In her absence John Allen has ridden Prince Of Penzance and the jockey, who was aboard at Caulfield on Saturday, will keep the ride for the season.

"Michelle is not in the frame," Weir told the Herald Sun on Monday. "John Allen will ride the horse."

The 30-year-old ended her association with Weir in January due to an increased workload and there have been reports of an ongoing rift between the jockey and some of Prince Of Penzance’s owners.

Outspoken rider

She famously told her doubters to "get stuffed" in the wake of her Melbourne Cup win amid reports a part-owner had been keen to replace her for the race.

Having required surgery on her pancreas following a fall at Mildura racecourse, east of Adelaide in May, there were calls, including from some of Prince Of Penzance’s owners, for her to quit the saddle.

In response, she tweeted: “Not anymore I’m done. Why work your arse off for people who don’t appreciate what you do and write you off anyway #moretolife.”

She deleted the tweet shortly after but not before it was widely retweeted and it appears connections of the horse have not forgiven her for the comment.

Prince Of Penzance made his fourth start of a low-key year in Saturday’s Group 1 Underwood Stakes, finishing a disappointing ninth of ten.
