Australian sire Stratum passes away aged 14

AUSTRALIAN sire Stratum has died at the age of 14 after suffering a heart attack in his paddock on Tuesday at Widden Stud.

The son of Redoute's Choice was trained by Paul Perry to win two races including the Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes and the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes.

Out of the Luskin Star mare Bourgeois, he was a brother to Group 2 scorer Dystopia.

Retired to Widden Stud after the following year after his Group 1 victory, his leading performers include Crystal Lilly, who emulated her sire by landing the Golden Slipper in 2010, four-time Group 1 winner Streama and Group 1 hero Stratum Star.

To date Stratum has sired 389 winners, including 30 stakes winner and has progeny earnings of over A$45 million.

Anthony Thompson, owner of the stud said: "It's a very sad day for us all. He was a great stallion and such a lovely kind horse.

"He was great to work with and he will be sadly missed."
