Racing Post Trophy (Group 1) 1m, 2yo colts and fillies
IF YOU want to win the Racing Post Trophy, just book Andrea Atzeni. For the fourth year running Atzeni was aboard the winner as Rivet made every yard to take victory for William Haggas.
Beaten in Group 1 company last time out in the Dewhurst, Rivet appreciated the extra furlong at Doncaster and did things the hard way, repelling a host of challengers, with favourite Yucatan runner-up.
Atzeni said: "The further he went the better he was and he hit the line strong. He's definitely going the right way and will be a stronger horse next year.
"It is my lucky track and I've ridden a lot of nice horses here. I've been very lucky, I ride some good horses for good trainers."
The money through the week had been for Aidan O'Brien's runners – first Capri, who was not declared, and then Yucatan.
But there was a nice touch landed on the day on Rivet, who had been available at 11-2 the night before but returned the 11-4 second-favourite.
The final Group 1 of the season in Britain and Ireland often acts as a good pointer to juveniles with Classic pretensions the following year, and Rivet shaped as though he could make an impact in the Qipco 2,000 Guineas.
Bookmakers trimmed the colt to around 16-1 for the Guineas (from 20).
