Awtaad comes back in Boomerang
Awtaad bounced back to form with a clear-cut victory in the Clipper Logistics Boomerang Stakes at Leopardstown.
Awtaad gets the better of Custom Cut to win the Boomerang Stakes.
The Irish 2,000 Guineas hero returned to winning ways when dropping down to Group Two company.
Gordon Lord Byron took the field along until early in the straight where David O'Meara's Custom Cut set sail for home in a bid to repeat last year's victory in this race.
However, Chris Hayes produced Kevin Prendergast's classy colt with a sweeping run on the outside and the 2/1 shot grabbed Custom Cut to storm clear to win by a length and a half.
Aidan O'Brien's Hit It A Bomb, the 15/8 favourite, was third.
"He's come back to himself. He had a bit of a dip after Ascot (St James's Palace Stakes). The ground was bottomless at Ascot and he ran well, finished third to two very good horses," said Prendergast.
"At Goodwood (Sussex Stakes) things just didn't go right. The ground was probably a bit firm and he didn't travel well – why I don't know. He seems to be back to himself today.
"The plan now is to go to Ascot for the QEII.
"I think he likes good ground. Most horses don't like brick hard ground. On good ground, he's himself. He's a very good horse on his day. He's run eight times and won five and been third twice.
"His blip was Goodwood and you'll always give them one excuse. He's keeping me going and gets me out of bed in the morning.
"We took the noseband off him because we put a tongue-tie on him. He was trying to hold his breath, which he did at Goodwood, and that's probably why he choked up a bit."
