Bailey to test Charbel stamina
Charbel could be stepped up in trip on his next start for a tilt at the BetBright Simply Smarter Betting With Genius Novices' Chase at Cheltenham on New Year's Day.
Charbel (l) could now step up in trip
The two-mile-five-furlong Grade Two contest, better known as the Dipper, is being considered by trainer Kim Bailey as a potential stopping point for the five-year-old.
After making a winning start over fences at Uttoxeter in October the five-times winner, who is yet to race beyond an extended two miles in 11 career starts, found Supreme Novices' Hurdle winner Altior too strong on his most recent outing.
Bailey said: "I was very pleased with Charbel. He learnt a lot more at Sandown as he made a mistake at the first which hadn't done before and we gave Altior a little bit of a run for his money.
"We will go back and look at races over further next time he runs and the Dipper is a possibility, we will just have to wait and see how he comes out of it first.
"At Cheltenham in March it would probably be two and a half miles for the JLT to avoid Altior but he will be entered in both (JLT and Arkle). At the end of the day he has got to get there in one piece."
