Pinpointing some of the intriguing names whose book sizes rose in 2016 according to the recently published Return of Mares

Baltic King
27 mares covered in 2016 (from five in 2015)
We're talking small numbers but the Tally-Ho Stud stalwart, a good source of tough, fast stock, got a little more of the respect he was due this year.

Camacho
178 mares from 117
Commercial breeders were perhaps hoping to capitalise in the future on Camacho doing well with his 2015 foals, bred off an increased fee on his return to Yeomanstown Stud.

Notnowcato
157 mares from 59

Former Flat sire had his focus switched to the jumps when bought by Knockhouse Stud in 2014 and benefited from a hot spell last winter when Flat-breds Long Dog and Old Guard scooped big pots over hurdles.

Power
185 mares from 58

A surge of confidence in Coolmore's son of Oasis Dream before his first two-year-olds ran this year. Four stakes winners from that debut crop, including Peace Envoy and Pleaseletmewin, went some way to justifying it.

Sir Percy
98 mares from 56

Lanwades Stud's champion two-year-old and Derby hero has worked his way to general recognition and to reward his new supporters he sired his first two top-level winners – Sir John Hawkwood and Wake Forest – in 2016.

Well Chosen
99 mares from 40

Unheralded Kedrah House Stud resident, whose only victory came in a Lingfield maiden, has caught the imagination of jumps breeders and his book size doubled this year. Studmate Rule Of Law was also in more demand, his book rising to 67 from 17 in 2015.

Worthadd
41 mares from 14

Irish National Stud-based son of Dubawi has not covered huge numbers but breeders clearly took notice of some good returns for his first foals – including a €56,000 top price – at last year's sales.
