BELARDO, a dual Group 1-winning son of Lope De Vega, has been retired and will take up stallion duties at Darley's Kildangan Stud for the 2017 breeding season, with a limited number of lifetime breeding rights to be sold in the four-year-old.
Bred by Ballylinch Stud out of the Danehill mare Danaskaya, Belardo was picked up by Ted Voute for €100,000 as a yearling at Arqana's August Sale on behalf of Prince A A Faisal. He went on to make a winning debut for Roger Varian in late-June 2014.

That win was followed by a Listed success in the Washington Singer Stakes at Newbury, before he rounded off his juvenile campaign with a two-length victory over Kodi Bear in the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket, after which he was crowned champion two-year-old colt of 2014.
After such a fruitful two-year-old campaign Godolphin purchased a majority share in Belardo, and while he went winless during the 2015 season he did finish the season off with a fine second behind Solow in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes.
Belardo began the 2016 season with a facile success in a Listed event at Doncaster, before adding a second Group 1 to his record in the Lockinge Stakes, defeating the likes of Euro Charline, Limato and Toormore.
His final start came in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot, when he finished a game second to star US mare Tepin. He retires having won five of his 16 starts and having amassed over £900,000 in prize-money.
Director of Darley stallions Sam Bullard said: "Belardo showed true class and grit in winning both the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes at two and the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes at four. As a champion juvenile and a Group 1 miler at three and four, he offers breeders speed, class and precocity, as well as being from the outstanding sire line of our own Shamardal as a son of Lope de Vega."
A fee for Belardo will be announced at a later date.
