FRAN BERRY said on Monday there was still plenty to look forward to as he got set to return from injury at Kempton on Wednesday after missing the height of the summer racing season.

Berry, in his first season as stable jockey to trainer Ralph Beckett, takes the mount on two-year-old Mount Moriah in a mile maiden, his first ride since he broke a vertebra in a fall at Doncaster on June 24.

Until injury he had ridden 26 winners and 15 for Beckett which included a first Royal Ascot success on Kinema in the Duke of Edinburgh.

"I've been riding out since last Friday and I'm looking forward to getting back," said Berry. "It's felt like ages particularly with the time of year that I've missed. It's been frustrating but it could have been worse."

Berry was riding the Alan Bailey-trained Mrs Eve at Doncaster when he was unseated as he pulled up the filly, who suffered a fatal injury turning into the straight.

"It was a stable fracture of a T10 vertebra," he said. "It was a bit unusual in that I didn't need any surgery nor a back brace.

Keeping fit

"I've been in the gym for the last five weeks, four or five days a week. I could do anything bar ride until the eight weeks were up so that the bone could heal. It needed time to fuse itself.

"Being able to move through that time was a big help in coming back relatively quickly.

"I've missed the bigger festival meetings, particularly Goodwood and the Ebor meeting. I'd love to have been there, but there are a lot of races still to go. There's the likes of Carntop and a lot of unraced two-year-olds to come out, which is exciting. Hopefully we can keep going the way we were before."
