Bets Of The Day: Drop in class key for Wall’s filly
15:20 Salisbury – Staunch worth a go at tempting oddsA horse that once cost a million dollars scored in this race in 2008. He went by the name of Stalking Shadow, and his career never really amounted to much afterwards. But I am hoping today’s selection at Salisbury can use the Pembroke Cup to go on to bigger and better things.Staunch is the pick for this four-runner field, but he ran like a million lira when last seen disappointing at Newmarket, and he does have a question mark over him. That was his handicap debut at HQ, and he was all over the place in the final stages. It was a tactical affair, but he rolled around when he met the rising turf, and folded somewhat tamely.Trainer Clive Cox will fit him with cheekpieces today, and that’s a good move. Watching the replay of his maiden success previously at Nottingham, he looked very green and inexperienced before picking up strongly. He did beat Perigee – who is fairly soft in a finish, but I liked the way he ran to the line.
There’s a chance that the Cheveley Park-owned runner could be a slow learner and he’s been immature. With headgear on and Adam Kirby riding, we can hope for better. The hot favourite here is Takatul at 8/11, and he looked good in winning at Yarmouth. But with only the quartet lining up here, I am surprised Staunch has basically been written off after one poor run.
