Birkett savours Intisaab success
Intisaab gave Shelly Birkett her most valuable success as a jockey when gaining a narrow success in the Coral Sprint Trophy at York.
Intisaab (centre): Gained a richly-deserved success
Birkett, who is now just needs two more winners to lose her riding allowance, named the Listed Aphrodite Stakes at Newmarket in July 2014 on Noble Protector as her biggest success.
However, this gave her immense pleasure as she steered Intisaab (14/1) to victory in this six-furlong handicap for her boss David O'Meara.
Running in typical breakneck fashion, this sprint was wide open with two furlongs to go but it was Intisaab who landed the spoils by a neck from Lexington Abbey.
Hoof It was a length and three-quarters away in third, with Pipers Note fourth.
Birkett, 22, and the daughter of Newmarket trainer Julia Feilden, said: "He actually felt flat through the race.
"He came off the bridle a lot earlier than he normally does, but for the first time in a while he had a clear run.
"Once he put his head down and got rolling, there was no stopping him. I'm really pleased with him. He goes on any ground and it's tacky out there.
"I first got the ride on him by chance as it was a busy Saturday. He ran really well and finished second. I've kept the ride ever since."
Owner Stuart Graham, from Humberside, said: "He seemed to run flat but then does what he always does and stay on well at the end. I wonder if we should step him up to seven furlongs.
"He's the first horse I've owned outright. I've had small shares, so this is my biggest win.
"I got the horse a couple of years ago at the sales. He did OK but then he got injured. David put him in a field for three or four months and was brilliant with him.
"Shelley is probably the reason why the horse, apart from David, has shot up in the ratings.
"She rides him out at home now and it's like a match made in heaven."
