BRANDO'S victory in Saturday's Ayr Gold Cup provided another feather in the cap of his breeder, Nicholas and Jane Forman Hardy's Car Colston Hall Stud and its foundation mare Wiener Wald.
The daughter of Woodman was acquired by the Forman Hardys at Keeneland in 1995 and has been a fantastic servant for the Nottinghamshire stud. However, the Forman Hardys enjoyed a large slice of luck when it came to securing Wiener Wald, as stud manager Jonathon Smithers explains.
"They spent five days looking at mares in Kentucky and decided on Wiener Wald," he said. "When she went through the ring there was some strong opposition, but the people who were bidding against them didn't seem to understand the auctioning system and, while they were in the middle of a debate, the mare was knocked down to Nicholas and Jane."
Not only has Wiener Wald since produced Racing Post Trophy winner Crowded House, but she has also supplied the stud with a number of her daughters who she now resides alongside, including the first filly she produced, Argent Du Bois, the dam of Brando.
Up until 2008, Argent Du Bois had produced only fillies, something that persuaded her breeders to send the mare to Pivotal.
"They wanted to focus on sires who do well with fillies and can be good broodmare sires," said Smithers. "They decided the Nureyev line would be a good cross for Argent Du Bois so she went to Pivotal, and that's how we got Brando."
Argent Du Bois has produced just the one foal since Brando, a Cape Cross colt this year, although she is also the great-granddam of this year's Vintage Stakes winner War Decree and has the progeny of two of her daughters set to go through the ring during Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Sale.
First comes a colt out of Sant Elena who is a Galileo half-brother to Reckless Abandon, whom Smithers said is "very speedy", followed by a "gorgeous-looking" Invincible Spirit half-brother to the Listed-placed Encore L'Amour out of Centime.
The stud will also offer four lots during Book 2, including the final produce of Wiener Wald, a colt by High Chaparral.
A changing of the guard may well be under way at Car Colston Hall, but if the recent exploits of its graduates is anything to go by the stud has plenty to look forward to.
