Buveur d’Air makes impressive start

Nicky Henderson's Buveur d'Air made a fine start to his chasing career when landing the Read Paddy Brennan At 32Red.com Novices' Chase at Haydock on Saturday.

Aidan Coleman: Won aboard Buveur d'Air

JP McManus' new recruit was third in last season's Sky Bet Supreme Novices' Hurdle before winning the Grade One Top Novices' Hurdle at Aintree on his final start last season.

He started life over fences over two miles in the Haydock fog, with previous course and distance winner Cloudy Dream a highly-credible rival following two wins from his first two chasing starts.

That prompted punters to back Malcolm Jefferson's charge and he did go favourite in the show, but late money for Buveur d'Air, who was receiving 8lb from his main rival, ensured he went off the 10-11 market leader at the off.

Through the mist he seemed to jump well, with Aidan Coleman always cutting a confident figure as Chic Name made the running.

The two market principals loomed up against each other before the last when it still looked wide open, but a better jump from Buveur d'Air gave him the advantage and he ran away from Cloudy Dream when shaken up on the run-in.

Sky Bet went 12-1 from 14-1 for the Racing Post Arkle and 10/1 from 12/1 for the JLT at the Cheltenham Festival.

Spokesman Michael Shinners said: "That was impressive from Buveur d'Air against a good horse in Cloudy Dream and we've trimmed him for a couple of races at Cheltenham after that."
