Can Frankel colt Zefferino go one place better?
Can Frankel colt Zefferino go one better? By Chris Hill 6:39PM 5 SEP 2016
FRANKEL colt Zefferino bids to go one better than on his debut when he contests Leicester's 7f maiden at 4.35pm on Tuesday.
The Roger Charlton-trained colt was a narrow half-length runner-up on debut at Newmarket and will be bidding to become a second winner at the course by his famous freshman sire following Senator's successful debut over the same distance in July.
Owned and bred by Saleh Al Homaizi and Imad Al Sagar, Zefferino is the first foal out of their once-raced mare Turama, a Newsells Park Stud-bred daughter of Pivotal who was purchased by Tony Nerses for 240,000gns at the 2010 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
Turama is herself a half-sister to seven winners including 2006 Sun Chariot winner Spinning Queen – dam of Gallipot and Trade Commissioner – and the 2004 Listed Acomb Stakes third Shannon Springs.
Jupiter Light was declared a non-runner in the Newmarket maiden where Zefferino made his racecourse debut but the John Gosden-trained colt looks set to line up in opposition on Tuesday.
The George Strawbridge homebred son of Lonhro is the second foal produced by the Sadler's Wells mare Fantasia, a triple Group/Grade 3 winner who was placed three times at the highest level when runner-up in the 2008 Fillies' Mile, 2011 Just A Game Stakes and third in the 2009 Poule d'Essai des Pouliches.
A three-parts sister to 1m4f Group 3 winner Pink Symphony and half-sister to the winning dam of Group 2 scorer Western Hymn, Fantasia is dam of one previous winner with her first foal by Tapit, Tasit, a two-time winner over 1m½f in the US.
Among their opponents is the Niarchos family homebred Elucidation, a son of Oasis Dream out of their 1m2f-placed mare Mimalia, a Silver Hawk half-sister to 2003 Derby hero Kris Kin.
Trained by Sir Michael Stoute, the juvenile colt was third on his debut at Newmarket just over a week ago.
Mimalia has produced three winners with Elucidation a half-brother to 1m2f Listed Fairway Stakes scorer Unnefer, successful miler Varega and Peloponnese, a two-time winner this season for Stoute over 1m2f and 1m4f.
Another well-related contender in the race is the twice-raced Born To Sea colt Naval Warfare who finished runner-up on his most recent start for Andrew Balding at Ffos Las over 7½f.
Out of the 6f winner Three Days In May, a daughter of Cadeaux Genereux, Naval Warfare is a half-brother to three winners including the 7f Group 2 Hungerford Stakes and dual Group 3 victor Gregorian and the winning miler Manderley, who was also placed third in the Listed Dick Hern Fillies' Stakes.
Bred by Rathasker Stud, where Born To Sea stood his first two seasons at stud before his move last year to Gilltown Stud, Naval Warfare carries the colours of Qatar Racing having been purchased by David Redvers for €105,000 at last year's Goffs Orby Yearling Sale.
Smart pedigrees on show in Leicester opener
Leicester's first race at 2pm, the 1m fillies' maiden, features a number of nicely bred juveniles with Coronet and Struck By The Moon in particular taking the eye on pedigree.
Making her debut for John Gosden, the Dubawi filly Coronet is a half-sister to four winners including 2010 Group 2 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial victor Midas Touch, who went on to finish runner-up in the Irish Derby and St Leger, and the Listed runner-up Streetcar To Stars.
A Denford Stud homebred, she is the eighth foal produced by 1m2f Listed scorer Approach, a Darshaan half-sister to 2006 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and Shadwell Turf Mile hero Aussie Rules.
Charlie Hills sends Struck By The Moon to the course for her debut and she looks another filly for whom the 1m trip is a good starting point being from a successful middle-distance family.
The daughter of Fastnet Rock was bred by Highclere Stud out of the 1m2f winner Ho Hi The Moon, a Be My Guest half-sister to European Group 1 winners Cerulean Sky and Moonstone, dam of this season's Chester Vase victor and Derby runner-up US Army Ranger.
Struck By The Moon has foaled three previous winners with Struck By The Moon being a three-parts sister to the Danehill mare Latin Love, a Listed scorer for David Wachman over 1m and 1m1f.
