BASKING in the glow of an authoritative victory in the July Cup at Newmarket last month, Henry Candy surprised those in attendance when suggesting the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood could be an option for his stable star Limato.
The four-year-old had already tried extending his stamina to a mile when fourth in the Lockinge earlier in the season and, while that plan was scrapped, another was hatched with the four-year-old set to drop back in trip to the minimum distance for the first time in Friday's Coolmore Nunthorpe Stakes at York.
Owner Paul Jacobs has refused seven-figure offers for Limato, and parted with the £30,000 supplementary fee for the Nunthorpe, which will look like money very well spent if he claims the £236,622 first prize.
Candy thinks coming back to five furlongs is worth a crack and said: "The horse is in great form. It's an experiment, but given the way he went at Newmarket we feel it's an experiment worth doing."
He added: "Good horses do different things. Good, old trainers used to say if they had a really good Derby winner it would win the July Cup. I know this is in reverse, but I think it's fairly true.
"It would be fantastic if he could run like he did in the July Cup – if he can transfer that to five furlongs – but the Nunthorpe is always a very exciting race."
Win, lose or draw on Friday, connections have plenty of backend options to discuss, with the Breeders' Cup uppermost in mind of the overseas possibilities.
