JCB Triumph Trial Juvenile Hurdle (Registered as the Prestbury Juvenile Hurdle) (Grade 2) 2m½f, 3yo
THE overnight rain at Cheltenham appeared to turn conditions testing, with all of those that finished – bar easy winner Defi Du Seuil – finishing out on their feet.
The going was eased to good to soft following 7mm of rain overnight but the three-year-olds finished very tired in this Grade 2, with the first two coming 58 lengths clear of the third after Dino Velvet fell at the last.
Just a length and three-quarters seperated the Philip Hobbs-trained 5-4 favourite and Diable De Sivola, but the winner was value for far more than the margin as Barry Geraghty took it as easy on the talented youngster.
Defi Du Seuil is outright 8-1 favourite in one book for the Triumph Hurdle in March and a best-priced 16-1 with Paddy Power, William Hill and Betfair, giving owner JP McManus a strong hand at the head of the market.
Trainer Philip Hobbs said: "We were hoping that might happen today but you never really know. Everything at home he does is really nice and it's a big relief for him to come here and do it.
"He's always jumped well and had a lovely attitude. Softer ground would be no issue and he's very likeable. Barry was delighted. He wouldn't need to be there that soon but he has a lot of boot."
