Coronet in tune for Dettori

Coronet maintained her unbeaten record in the Listed Godolphin Flying Start Zetland Stakes at Newmarket.

John Gosden's filly maintained her unbeaten record

After winning narrowly on her racecourse debut at Leicester last month, trainer John Gosden stepped the daughter of Dubawi up to Listed class for the 10-furlong contest and she duly proved up to the task on the Rowley Mile.

The 3/1 favourite was locked in a battle with stable companion Cunco inside the final furlong and the filly emerged on top, scoring by a neck from the son of Frankel.

Winning jockey Frankie Dettori told Racing UK: "She's an inexperienced filly but has learned a lot from her first race. She's a lovely filly and one we can dream about over the winter."

Gosden was delighted with the pair of his runners, saying: "It's an ideal race really as you can bring a nice staying type – a middle-distance filly like Coronet – and a tough little guy like Cunco, whose been crying out for a mile and a quarter, and it's an ideal opportunity to run them both in a race of this nature and it was a good race.

"Cunco is growing up well, he's physically grown a lot. He's the first foal born in January of the mare so he was tiny but he's grown up mentally and physically.

"Coronet will be put in the Oaks and I'd have thought the logical target would be the Musidora. I wouldn't dream of running her again this season, she's done everything asked of her. She'll come back in May and we'll see where we are."

Permian (20/1) got the worst of a close three-way finish and had to settle for third, but his trainer Mark Johnston was encouraged by the neck and half-length defeat.

He said: "Joe [Fanning, jockey] said that if he'd sat a bit longer, he might have pinched it.

"I couldn't say that but he's run a real good race and that's probably it for the season.

"That was a great race today and there's all these initiatives to get promising stayers and I'd like to see more races like these.

"It's hard to say that that is as good a Zetland as we've seen for a while, but it was a good-sized field and while there have been wide margin winners in the past, that was a close finish and hopefully that will indicate a good race."
