Cup stepping-stone for Tropics

Veteran sprinter Tropics

Veteran sprinter Tropics will be given an outing in the EBF Cathedral Stakes at Salisbury ahead of attempting to make it third time lucky in the Darley July Cup at Newmarket.

Trainer Dean Ivory intends to make the six-furlong Listed prize on June 18 the next port of call for the nine-year-old, before aiming him at the Group One contest in which he finished runner-up in both 2014 and 2015.

The son of Speightstown was down the field on his first start in more than a year and a half in a Listed event at Windsor last month.

Ivory said: "All being well he will head to Salisbury for the Cathedral Stakes, then we will have another go at the July Cup.

"That will give me a month to sharpen him up for the July Cup, as he will only get one more crack at it.

"I was delighted with his comeback effort. I was not hard on him and he came back sound, that is the main thing. You have to remember he was off for 18 months but he still showed that little bit of sparkle.

"It takes these older horses a while to get going again, but now we have got him going again there is no point stopping. The fun he has given me is enormous. If any horse deserved to win the July Cup, it is him."
