Dark Angel mania took hold at Doncaster this week, with Yeomanstown Stud's hotshot young sire accounting for six of the ten most expensive lots at the Premier sale including the two biggest sellers at £280,000 and £250,000.

Current yearlings were conceived in 2014, when his fee was more than doubled to €27,500 on the back of a productive year with son Lethal Force landing two Group 1 sprints and Exogenesis, Heeraat and Lily's Angel scoring in Pattern contests.

The fee increase left plenty of room for profit, with Dark Angel's £124,933 Premier Sale average working out at around 5.3 times the stud fee, although some of the stallion's draft at Doncaster were pinhooks.

Margins were even more in favour of breeders at Doncaster last year, when Dark Angel had firmly established himself as a leading source of precocity and speed – just what Premier sale buyers crave – but his yearlings had been conceived off a fee of €12,500.

The biggest rewards were reaped by those breeders who took a chance on Dark Angel in his fourth year at stud, just before his first two-year-olds ran. When the result of those €7,000 matings were offered as yearlings at Doncaster in 2013, in the month after Lethal Force had completed his Group 1 double in the July Cup, they sold for an average of £79,500 – more than 13 times the stud fee.

It remains a head-scratcher why Dark Angel's average price at the Premier Sale dropped to £38,077 in 2014, as results at other auctions ensured the sire's general average price did increase that year. Among the bargains in the Dark Angel draft at Doncaster that year were Log Out Island (cost £95,000) and Easton Angel (£30,000), who were both resold or part-sold for big profits after revealing their talent.

Next year's Dark Angel yearlings will be the last bred at €27,500, with his fee having leapt to €60,000 this year, when breeders will be hoping to recoup their investment with even better auction prices for progeny of the sire.
