Daryl Jacob: Has some good rides at Cheltenham on Saturday
I'm really looking forward to riding Domperignon Du Lys in the JCB Triumph Trial Juvenile Hurdle at Cheltenham on Saturday. He did it very nicely on his British debut at Newcastle and, while it was a bit of a muddling race, visually he was very impressive.
Clearly Saturday represents a step up in class and Defi Du Seuil was very impressive when winning at the course last time. Going up against him will give us a fair idea of where we stand and where we should be aiming. My fellow will be fine on the ground here, in fact I think he wants good going.
Kings Odyssey is a great spare to pick up in the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup. I'll speak to Paul Moloney about him and watch a lot of videos but he's a course and distance winner and Evan Williams is sure to have him cherry ripe for the big day.
I can't wait to ride Wholestone in the Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle. Obviously we already have plenty of form with West Approach and I think the step up to three miles is very much in my horse's favour. He's improving all the time, getting better with every run, and I'm sure he'll run a very big race.
The closing OLBG Mares' Handicap Hurdle looks very competitive. I ride Run Ructions Run for Dr Newland whose horses continue in great form. She ran well in a Listed mares' race at Kempton last time and is another with a chance.
I've three rides at Southwell on Sunday. My agent Dave Roberts has got me on The Jugopolist in the opening Rachel Hall 40th Birthday Handicap Chase. He won at Huntingdon last time and looks a very good spare to pick up.
I ride Vesuvhill for Ben Case in the Vertu Volkswagen Mansfield Handicap Chase. He makes his reappearance here so his rivals could have a fitness advantage on him but I did win on the horse at Warwick back in 2015 off the same handicap mark.
My main ride on the card is Laser Light in the Millie Ann Novices' Hurdle and I'm really looking forward to him. He did nothing wrong at Ascot last time when he just bumped into a very good, horse of Colin Tizzard's in Elegant Escape. We were well clear of Warren Greatrex's Aloomomo in third and I thought it was a step forward from my fellow. I'm hoping for another on Sunday as the hurdles at Southwell will suit him.
I was very impressed with Messire Des Obeax at Sandown last Friday. He jumped and travelled really well. For me the race wasn't run at a really fast pace and we just fleetingly got outpaced turning in.
However from the back of the second last to the last he really ate up the ground and it was a terrific performance to give weight and a beating to Ballyandy. He's another who is going the right way.
I also thought Ucello Conti ran well to be fourth in the Becher Chase. He stayed on well and was closer to The Last Samurai than he was in the Grand National in the spring. That race is again the plan now, it was a really good warm-up, and I just hope we get better ground than last year for him.
