Daryl Jacob: Royal rumble
Our columnist Daryl Jacob says Bristol De Mai remains on course for the Gold Cup and gives his thoughts on his Saturday rides.
Sceau Royal (right): Expected to go well at Wincanton
It was disappointing that Bristol De Mai didn't run his race in the Denman Chase at Newbury last Saturday. He never felt comfortable under me after jumping three fences, was very flat, and he was slightly lame the next morning.
Thankfully, everything is absolutely A1 again with him now. That wasn't the real Bristol De Mai last Saturday and hopefully he'll be back to his very best in the Cheltenham Gold Cup which is the next stop for him.
We run another of our Cheltenham horses on Saturday in Sceau Royal who contests the Betway Kingwell Hurdle at Wincanton.
There are only seven in the race and I'm really looking forward to it. You can put a line through my fellow's last run at Newcastle, he wasn't right afterwards, and his previous form this season would give him an outstanding chance here.
Yanworth is obviously going to be very hard to beat but we get 4lb from him and I hope that helps us out. Sceau Royal is heading to the Stan James Champion Hurdle and this race will tell us an awful lot about where we stand.
I'm on Water Wagtail in the opening Download The Betway App Handicap Chase. I won on him a couple of starts ago and he's a consistent sort. He disappointed the last day but perhaps he was a bit flat after a few quick runs. He's had a break since and will hopefully bounce back.
Dance Floor King won under me at Exeter last time. He'd come back down to a good mark and took advantage of it there.
He won nicely and while he's gone up in the weights since, we hope he could still be a pound or two ahead of the assessor. Nick Mitchell's horses are in good form too which is a positive going into the Betway Handicap Chase.
It's great to pick up a spare ride for Vic Dartnall aboard Midnight Sapphire in the Betway Best Odds Guaranteed Plus Handicap Hurdle. I haven't ridden for him for a couple of seasons but this mare is in the form of her life right now and deserves to get her head in front again after a run of seconds.
I'm now on Gardefort for Venetia Williams in the Betway Best Odds Guaranteed Plus Handicap Chase and he's not without a chance either. He has been running well of late and finished strongly at Doncaster last time.
I don't know a great deal about my last two rides and will be watching videos of both Madame Lafite and Master Majic on Friday night.
The former runs in the Betway Handicap Hurdle and was running a nice race when brought down at Leicester last time.
Master Majic is in very good hands as he's trained by Colin Tizzard and I'm sure they hope he's capable of showing some improvement in the closing Betway 'National Hunt' Novices' Hurdle.
