De Coronado bids to break maiden at Dundalk

De Coronado bids to break maiden at Dundalk
By Chris Hill 6:41PM 13 AUG 2016

THE final race at Dundalk on Sunday sees De Coronado, a three-year-old brother to superstar mare Zenyatta, make his second racecourse appearance for Aidan O'Brien in the mile maiden at 5.15pm.

The son of Street Cry should appreciate the step down in trip – and also the synthetic surface – after finishing ninth on his debut over 1m4f at the Curragh.

Out of the winning Kris S mare Vertigineux, De Coronado is also a half-brother to triple US Grade 1 winner Balance, Remington Park Oaks winner Where's Bailey, and the unplaced dam of Long Island Sound, who was third for O'Brien in this season's Tercentenary Stakes.

Unfortunately Zenyatta hasn't had as much success as a broodmare with two of her foals having died and Ziconic, her three-year-old colt by Tapit, the only one of her two living foals to have been placed. She is in foal to Medaglia d'Oro.

Dundalk maiden hosts sister to Group 1 winner Johannes Vermeer

The 7f two-year-old fillies maiden at 3.40pm features plenty of well-bred contenders but three in particular take the eye on pedigree.

Willie McCreery has selected the race as the starting point in the career of Covetous, a Darley homebred by Medaglia D´Oro.

Covetous is the third foal produced by the speedy Jealous Again, who became US trainer Wesley Ward's first Group winner in Britain when storming to a five length victory in the 2009 Queen Mary Stakes.

A daughter of Trippi, Jealous Again has been represented by one previous winner in Queen Of Sicily, who won last season for Jim Bolger and was subsequently third in the Group 3 Anglesey Stakes.

Aidan O'Brien has two fillies entered with Elizabeth Browning bidding to improve on the runner-up effort achieved on her second start and Nutcracker Suite making her racecourse debut.

A daughter of Galileo, Elizabeth Browning is a sister to Johannes Vermeer, a three-time winner from 7f to a mile whose greatest victory came in the last year's Criterium International.

Out of the Holy Roman Emperor mare Inca Princess, a winning daughter of the Group 2 Ribblesdale Stakes heroine Miletrian, Elizabeth Browning shares her page with the Group winner Mr Combustible.

O'Brien had notable success last season with fillies by Fastnet Rock courtesy of the top-level victories of Qualify and Diamondsandrubies, and Nutcracker Suite is another daughter of the former champion Australian sire.

Out of the dual Group 3 scorer Dietrich, a daughter of Storm Cat, she is a sibling to eight winners and is a three-parts sister to Group 3 Renaissance Stakes victress Beauty Bright.

She is also a half-sister to last year's Listed Queen's Vase winner and 2014 Racing Post Trophy runner-up Aloft.

Final foal of Cheveley great in action at Pontefract

Later in the day, the aptly named Russian Finale bids to register a first victory for William Haggas in the mile maiden at Pontefract at 4.50pm, having been third on her debut at the course last month.

The Cheveley Park Stud homebred by Dansili is the final foal produced by their brilliant racemare Russian Rhythm, who claimed four victories at Group 1 level including the 2003 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes and Nassau Stakes.

By Kingmambo, Russian Rhythm produced six foals prior to her death in 2014 aged 14, with three going on to be winners including her 2007 foal by Pivotal, Safina. She earned black-type when third in the Listed Sandringham Handicap and is herself the dam of this year's Group 3 Fred Darling Stakes winner Marenko.

The family received a boost earlier in the week when Zonderland, a son of Dutch Art out of a placed half-sister to Russian Finale, ran out an impressive winner of the Group 3 Sovereign Stakes at Salisbury on Thursday.
