MICHAEL DODS has admitted that it will be a step into the unknown should Mecca's Angel tackle the 6f Qipco British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot a week on Saturday.

His dual Nunthorpe winner, who was third in the Prix de l'Abbaye last weekend, has raced exclusively over 5f since 2013 and the trainer is not certain she will get the trip.

"It is a stiffish six at Ascot and nobody knows," he said. "She is so fast over five, it is hard to know what she would do over six. But even in France she wasn't stopping, she kept on but they were keeping on a bit quicker, so we're hopeful she'll stay.

"The twice she has won at York she has got way round the corner before she has been pulled up."

Dods, who is set to decide on Monday whether to give the soon-to-retire Mecca's Angel one final run at Ascot, stressed that he was more than happy with the mare's effort behind Marsha and Washington DC at Longchamp.

"We were disappointed we didn't win but we were delighted she ran well," he said.

"There was speed both sides of her and it was important to hold her position, which meant that she was probably going a bit hard early on, which we had to do or they would have shut the door, but they set it up for the horses that were dropped in such as Marsha and Washington DC."
