Doncaster target for Akhlaaq
Salisbury maiden winner Akhlaaq is to take the next step up the ladder at Doncaster's St Leger meeting.
Trainer Owen Burrows: Looking forward to next week's St Leger Festival
The Hamdan Al Maktoum-owned colt, who is a general 33/1 shot for next year's Qipco 2000 Guineas, was comfortably on top of a six-furlong race on August 10, despite only winning by a neck.
Trainer Owen Burrows said: "Akhlaaq was still very green at Salisbury.
"His greenness caught him out early on, but once the penny dropped late on in the race he picked up really well.
"There is a six-furlong conditions race on the first day of the Leger meeting at Doncaster on September 7 and we thought that might be a suitable next start for him so he is pencilled in for that. Paul (Hanagan) said to leave him at six.
"I didn't want to stick him in a Group race because he is still quite babyish and it can over-face them at that stage of their career and that is the last thing I want to do.
"He came out of his last race fine and did an easy bit of work.
"We will just start building him back up now."
