Dr Robin has winning formula

Peter Bowen's long journey to Sedgefield was rewarded with the success of Dr Robin in the JG Paxtons Handicap Chase.

Peter Bowen: Sedgefield winner

With Bowen based in Pembrokeshire, his runner made the nine-hour journey on Sunday so the team had more reasons to be thankful than most that the meeting was eventually given the go-ahead following five inspections.

Bowen's son Sean, who also rides for Paul Nicholls, was in the plate and having looked beaten at the second last, he rallied to see off Wolf Sword by a length and three-quarters.

"It helps when they jump as well as he does," said Bowen jnr of the 4-1 winner.

"The one in front just got tired and my lad kept galloping. It will make the journey home shorter."

The famous Sedgefield hill claimed another victim as Strait Run threw away a first win over hurdles inside the final 100 yards in the Sedgefield Bookmakers Handicap Hurdle.

Micky Hammond's charge appeared to have the race sewn up as he went five lengths clear, but the run in was longer than usual with the final flight omitted because of frozen patches and he began to tread water.

Dark And Dangerous (13-2) and Aimee Waugh stayed on strongly to snatch victory, eventually running out four-and-a-half-length winners.

"He has to be in the right mood but he tried really hard today," said Waugh of the winner, who is trained by her father, Simon.

"Jumping the last I thought we were beat, but I could see the other one coming back to me."

Sue Smith's Sharp Response had no trouble landing short odds (2-13 favourite) in the sunbets.co.uk Novices' Hurdle.

"It wasn't ideal making the running as he's still green," jockey Sean Quinlan told At The Races.

"He wasn't beaten that far by Clyne in that race in the fog at Haydock – at least we don't think he was!"

Joseph Mercer (7-2) won for the first time in over four years in the Wram Fabrications Handicap Hurdle for Adam Nicol and trainer Tina Jackson, while Sam England's good form continued with the success of Ask Paddy (4-7 favourite) in the Wills Property Services Handicap Hurdle.
