FOR consignor Harry Dutfield, Wednesday's second session of the Goffs UK January Sale will signal the start of the end of an era as he offers stock from his late mother Nerys's estate.
Dutfield, who passed away in July last year after a battle with cancer, was known for her skill of purchasing horses for low sums and striking gold with them on the racetrack.
Among her most notable successes was Lady Dominatrix, who she bought for Ir£2,000 and later trained to win the Group 3 World Trophy at Newbury and finish a close sixth in the Nunthorpe.
Among the lots going under the hammer on Wednesday are Aoninch (Lot 349), a 17-year-old daughter of Inchinor in foal to Norse Dancer and described by Harry Dutfield as "part of the family", and Carrigeen Queen (350), a 13-year-old daughter of Darnay who has produced three foals to date.
Dutfield said: "I remember buying Aoninch with my mum at what was the Goffs Autumn Bonus Sale. It's sad to see the mare go but they've got to go to the ring as part of settling the estate.
"Some of mum's stock will be in the May sales and hopefully by June that will be all of mum and dad's horses gone.
"I'm just hoping they go to nice homes. Like my mum, I look through a catalogue and if I see a cheap filly, I think it's a stunner. I like the option of buying a filly as you can breed from them. which is what she did."
Dutfield demonstrated he had inherited his mother's eye for a bargain when he pinhooked subsequent Group 2 scorer Kool Kompany as a foal for just €8,000 in 2012.
