BALLYLINCH STUD has announced that dual Group 1 winner Fascinating Rock has been retired from racing and will take up stallion duties at Ballylinch in 2017.

Fascinating Rock, a five-year-old son of top international sire Fastnet Rock, was an impressive winner of both the Champion Stakes at Ascot and the Tattersalls Gold Cup at the Curragh, beating the exception filly Found on both occasions, by one and a quarter lengths on the first occasion and by three and three quarter lengths on the latter.

He retires as the winner of eight of his 15 starts, with his two Group 1 victories, gained at four and five, complemented by a quartet of Group 3 successes, two of which came at three, and a Listed win.

Bred by his owners Newtown Anner Stud, he is out of the winning Polar Falcon mare Miss Polaris and is a half-brother to the Listed-winning hurdler Quick Jack.

He shares his further family with the likes of Group 2 winner Gothenburg and the Grade 2 winner Nancy From Nairobi.

Commenting on the acquisition, Ballylinch Stud's managing director John O'Connor said: "We're delighted that owner-breeder Maurice Regan of Newtown Anner Stud will partner with Ballylinch to develop Fascinating Rock's stud career and both will hold a sizeable interest in him, with the remaining shares being syndicated among breeders."

Trainer Dermot Weld, who guided Fascinating Rock throughout his career, said: "Fascinating Rock was an outstanding horse to train. A true champion and multiple Group 1 winner, he defeated the best horses in the world from Postponed to Found.

"A good stakes winner over a mile, he had the ability to carry that speed to win two Group 1 races over ten furlongs. He has great conformation, size & scope and a lovely temperament."

His owner Maurice Regan added "I really love Fascinating Rock and will be putting all my efforts into supporting him both at stud and at the sales. I am really looking forward to racing his progeny."

Fascinating Rock will stand at a fee of €10,000.
