THERE was a shake-up in the betting for Saturday’s Totescoop6 Challenge Cup after ante-post favourite Morando was missing from the confirmations on Monday.
The progressive three-year-old, who had been as low as 5-1 with some firms, was last seen winning his third race on the trot at Ayr this month, after which trainer Roger Varian suggested remaining at a mile for the Balmoral Handicap at Ascot on Champions Day was the more likely option.
Varian still possesses a leading candidate for the 7f handicap at Ascot in the shape of Certificate, who has already landed a big payday for connections when claiming the £100,000 Goodwood Revival Stakes last month.
The Cheveley Park Stud five-year-old is joined on 9st 8lb by Librisa Breeze, who won the Gigaset International Stakes over course and distance in July, with only last year’s winner Buckstay allocated more weight on 9st 9lb.
Betfred rate Certificate and Librisa Breeze as 8-1 shots – a price also given to the David O'Meara-trained Firmament – in a market topped by 5-1 shot Castle Harbour.
The John Gosden-trained colt won his first two starts at Newmarket and York before finishing sixth when sent off favourite for the Group 3 Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot last time.
Ten for Sun Chariot
Ten contenders have stood their ground for the same day’s Kingdom of Bahrain Sun Chariot Stakes at Newmarket, with two-time Group 1 winner Alice Springs the headline act.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained filly claimed the Matron Stakes last time by three and a quarter lengths from Persuasive, who could reoppose in the mile contest.
Last year’s Juddmonte International heroine Arabian Queen also features in a home team containing Always Smile, Epsom Icon and Irish Rookie, while South Africa could be represented by top mare Smart Call.
Ervedya, Siyoushake and Volta could bid to give France a sixth success in eight years.
