Footpad flying high in Ryanair
Daryl Jacob is looking forward to another Grade One ride aboard Footpad at Leopardstown on Thursday.
Daryl Jacob: Rides Footpad on Thursday
I've had a good few days riding in Ireland and Gordon Elliott's Missy Tata was really impressive in the Listed Irish Independent Hurdle at Limerick on Wednesday.
She jumps very economically and did very well in what was bad ground. This was over two miles and she's got speed, but two-and-a-half miles should be no problem, so the OLBG Mares' Hurdle at the Festival looks an obvious target.
The ground has been riding relatively quick in Ireland for the time of year and the yielding conditions at Leopardstown on Tuesday were probably a touch too quick for Ucello Conti in the Paddy Power Chase.
He was second in the same race last year off a 7lb lower mark but finished seventh this time around. Still, it was a pleasing enough effort and the plan would possibly be the Troytown followed by another crack at the Grand National.
I remain in Ireland for the Grade One Ryanair Hurdle at Leopardstown on Thursday and I'm really looking forward to riding Footpad for Willie Mullins.
He's the outsider of the five in places but he ran really well at Auteuil last time out and there's the opportunity to pick up some good prize money here.
He'll be fine on the ground and the drop back in trip to two miles wouldn't bother him either, though his stablemate, Nichols Canyon, obviously looks the one to beat.
Finally, despite finishing last in the 32Red King George VI Chase Josses Hill gave me a great feel around Kempton on Boxing Day.
He looked like he was going to be second to an exceptional horse yet he just didn't stay, but I was very happy with him. He ran a great race.
It looks like he'll be aimed at the Ryanair Chase now and the drop back in trip looks ideal for him, it could be right up his street.
*Daryl will be back on Friday to talk about his weekend rides.
