QEWY (Charlie Appleby/Kerrin McEvoy) put up a gutsy staying performance to thrust himself into contention for a start in the Melbourne Cup as he scored an emotional victory.
Appleby and McEvoy teamed up in the Caulfield Cup on Saturday, finding only Jameka too good but the pair could not be kept down for long, with McEvoy producing an inspired front-running ride to hand Appleby a first Australian winner.
French import Grey Lion, trained by Matt Cumai, battled all the way up the straight but was ultimately denied by a long neck, with Qewy's stablemate Oceanographer flying home late to take third and complete a superb result for Appleby and Godolphin.
"I'm absolutely delighted and all credit goes to the team, they have worked so hard since they got here," said James Ferguson. "We came here to do a job, these are the horses we picked to do it and it's fantastic for the whole team at home.
"He's a personal favourite of mine too having been over the jumps with my old man [John Ferguson], so I genuinely couldn't be happier for Sheikh Mohammed, Charlie, the team at home and my old man. Kerrin gave it a great ride too."
'He'd be an each-way chance in Cup'
The win is a significant boost to Qewy's chances of gaining a start in the Melbourne Cup on November 1 and although McEvoy would not be available to take the ride, he likes the six-year-old's chances of running a big race.
"I wanted to make it a test and full credit to the horse, he may lack a change of gears but he's very genuine and just keeps picking up," said McEvoy.
"Top of the straight, I thought Grey Lion was going to get to me but my lad never let him get closer than a head. Obviously he stays further than that, so the Cup is a viable option now and he'd be a good each-way chance."
