Goodwood target for Garfield

Sound And Silence beats Roussel and James Garfield (left) in the Windsor Castle Stakes at Royal Ascot.

James Garfield is set to step up in both distance and class for the Qatar Vintage Stakes at Goodwood.

Third on his racecourse debut at Leicester at the end of May, the son of Exceed And Excel then ran an excellent race to occupy the same position in the Windsor Castle at Royal Ascot.

He made the most of having his sights lowered when dominating his rivals in a Doncaster maiden a week ago and trainer George Scott sees the seven-furlong Group Two at Goodwood on August 1 as the perfect test for his star youngster.

"He surprised me a little bit at Doncaster in the way that he responded so well to particularly easy pressure," said the Newmarket handler.

"He hit the line extremely well and he galloped out through it. I liked the way he galloped out round the bend afterwards and I think we will now step him up to seven furlongs in the Vintage Stakes.

"I think the trip in a Vintage will suit him. He has got a little bit more experience behind him and he is a bit more relaxed.

"The seven furlongs in the Vintage will allow him to get in a better rhythm, more so than the speed of the six furlongs in the Richmond Stakes."
