Guard equals all-weather record
Stand Guard equalled the record number of all-weather wins for a racehorse with victory at Kempton on Tuesday evening.
Liam Keniry rode the popular Stand Guard to a 10/1 success
The John Butler-trained 12-year-old matched La Estrella's 27-win haul on the all-weather when he scooted three-quarters of a length clear in a mile-and-a-half handicap, for which he was sent off at odds of 10-1 under Liam Keniry.
Butler now has set his sights on Stand Guard winning the record outright.
The Newmarket handler said: "He's not easy to train, but he's got a big heart and that's the key to him, in my eyes.
"He loves the attention, and you find that special horses thrive on the attention.
"He's a family pet at home and hopefully we'll try and go for the record outright now.
"We'll see what the handicapper does next week, and after that we'll pick a race and see where we go from there.
"I'd be disappointed if he didn't win again, but if he doesn't, he doesn't – he certainly doesn't owe us a thing.
"He's special, there's no question about that."
