Harraild bypasses Royal Ascot
Dal Harraild is set to swerve the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot and instead head to Ireland for the Comer Group International Curragh Cup on July 2.
Connections of the William Haggas-trained four-year-old feel it would be unfair to ask the progressive stayer to jump up markedly to the extreme distance of two and a half miles for the Group One showpiece straight from winning the Grand Cup at York over six furlongs shorter.
"I don't think he will go to Ascot as it is a big jump up from a mile and three-quarters to two and a half miles so we are looking towards the Curragh Cup," said Haggas' wife and assistant, Maureen..
"Luckily the rain hadn't got into the ground when he won at York last time.
"The hope is that he could be a Melbourne Cup horse at the end of the year as he loves that quick ground."
