Hathal is Superior at Haydock

Hathal (11/2) and Frankie Dettori swooped late to win the 32Red Mile (registered as the Superior Mile Stakes) at Haydock Park.

The William Haggas-trained four-year-old was making his seasonal reappearance in the Group Three but made light of the testing conditions to prevail in a thrilling finish.

Custom Cut and Convey cut out the early running but there was a difference of opinion between the pair with Andrea Atzeni opting to plough a long furrow down the centre of the track on the latter.

Convey still appeared to be in front with a furlong to run but the patiently ridden winner, in company with Mitchum Swagger, started to make their move.

The three moved closer together inside the final half a furlong with Hathal edging out Mitchum Swagger and Convey by a head and a neck.
