ROYAL ARTILLERY got the better of a protracted duel with favourite Scottish to spring a minor surprise in the Rose of Lancaster Stakes.
The son of War Front was an extremely impressive winner of his only start as a juvenile and was considered by some to be a contender for Classic honours. He had failed to make an impression on his first two outings as a three-year-old but showed markedly improved form to justify his initial lofty reputation and win by a length and a quarter at 10-1.
Arab Spring, making his first start since May last year, finished strongly to finish third.
Royal Artillery, who is trained by John Gosden and is owned by Coolmore trio John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith, was ridden by Colm O'Donoghue.
