Home win for Berkshire

Berkshire scored his first success since October 2014 as he made all to win the Listed Sri Lanka August Stakes at Windsor.

Berkshire: Windsor winner

The five-year-old looked a possible Classic contender as a juvenile but has suffered with a number of problems in the last couple of years and had been off the track since that 2014 win before returning at the start of the current campaign.

After failing to get his head in front in four outings so far, trainer Paul Cole opted to employ different tactics in this extended one-mile-three-furlong heat, with Jim Crowley allowing his mount to bowl along in front rather than sitting in behind.

Berkshire seemed to relish the opportunity to run from the front and he was still in control with a couple of furlongs to run, although the challengers were lining up in behind.

Only Majeed emerged from the pack to make a race of it though, and the pair were neck and neck at the line, with Berkshire edging it by a short head.

Second Step, the 7-4 favourite, finished a three-and-three-quarter-length third.
