Hugo Palmer: My Friday runners at Newbury and Newmarket
13:30 Newcastle – Hydroxide
He is a non-runner.
14:20 Newbury – Colibri
Although the bare form of his debut eighth at Goodwood wasn't anything to write home about I was more than satisfied with the run. He was clearly very much in need of the experience there – it was a slowly-run race and it was hard to come from the back, as well – but I liked the way that he finished his race off. It augured well for the future. I would hope and expect that we will see him take a considerable step forward here but these Newbury maidens are always hugely competitive and this looks no exception, with some well-bred and expensive newcomers in opposition as well as the raced contingent.
18:35 Newmarket – Spring Jig
I think we will be talking a lot about my two-year-olds for the rest of the season! He is another of my youngsters who made a highly satisfactory debut, in his case finishing third in a 7f Sandown maiden. I am not sure how strong the form is – for a start, none of the horses in that race have run since – but he shaped well in his own right, and as if this extra furlong would suit. I am not entirely sure that he is going to run as I don't think he wants the ground too quick, but it is currently raining here in Newmarket (Thursday morning). He has an entry on the all-weather at Kempton next week if he doesn't run. If he does, the four newcomers could all prove troublesome, as they all boast very attractive pedigrees and California's half-brother Poseidon cost 320,000 euros as a yearling.Read More at betfair.com
