Hugo Palmer: My views on Crimean Tatar at York on Friday

York 15:30 – Crimean Tatar

As I've said before in this column, Crimean Tatar is a horse I have high hopes for and while he lost his unbeaten record in the John Porter Stakes last month, I was delighted with his performance. He was the least experienced runner in the field at Newbury, and he showed there that he is still a work in progress, but he kept on well on ground which was a bit too quick for him, and showed that he stayed the trip thoroughly.

That run against proven group performers has benefited his development, and it's fair to say he's learning all the time. In addition, the Yorkshire Cup will be run on easier ground and over a longer trip, a pair of factors which will be very much in his favour, while York's long straight will also suit.

He clearly faces another stern test in such a strong race, meeting John Porter winner Muntahaa on the same terms, while the others have all won at least at Group 3 level, but he's ready for the challenge.
