HWPA in ITV Racing talks

Horserace Writers and Photographers Association president Steven Cargill is confident the racing media will enjoy a good relationship with ITV when the channel takes over terrestrial coverage of the sport from New Year's Day.

ITV Racing are hoping for cleaner interview pictures

The HWPA is looking forward to working with ITV and wants to allay any fears reporters and photographers may have about access to winning connections after the station outlined new plans for post-race interviews.

"We look forward to working with ITV and look forward to having a friendly association with them, as we did with Channel 4," said Cargill.

"Myself and Marcus Townend (of the Daily Mail) have had a meeting with them.

"I'd already sent an email to Richard Willoughby (ITV racing editor) and he said there weren't going to be any great changes.

"All they are concerned about is having cleaner interview pictures.

"They have no intention of preventing journalists from listening in from the side and behind the interviewer, so long as they are not leaning into the shot."

ITV Racing intends to interview the winning rider, as Channel 4 have done, and plans to have a reporter, accompanied by a camera and floor manager, in the winner's enclosure for a quick reaction after each race.

The intention is then to hold more detailed interviews and analysis from a raised presentation position pod in the parade ring.

ITV's coverage kicks off on January 1 with racing from Cheltenham and Musselburgh.
