Irving not certain to run at Haydock

Connections of Irving are leaning towards a date at Newcastle instead of the Betfair Price Rush Hurdle at Haydock on Saturday.

Irving: Could bypass Haydock

The Paul Nicholls-trained eight-year-old won the valuable race on Merseyside 12 months ago, but preference at this stage is for the Fighting Fifth Hurdle on Saturday week.

Irving was also successful in the Grade One Fighting Fifth in 2014, but was well beaten in last year's renewal and will not be asked to run in both races this season.

Dan Downie, racing manager for owners Axom, said: "We had a chat (on Monday morning) and things are probably still a little bit up in the air.

"Haydock have had a bit of rain, but possibly not enough to make it really demanding, so we could be tempted to wait a week and go to Newcastle.

"He has schooled very well and is ready to go, but there is a question mark about the ground at Haydock, and it could be we get to Thursday and decide to hang on for the Fighting Fifth."
