JOHN GOSDEN believes Jack Hobbs has thrived for his six months off and will be right in the mix in Saturday's Qipco British Champion Stakes for which there are 19 possible runners.

Third in the race last year behind Fascinating Rock, the four-year-old has not been sighted since pulling up at Newmarket in April.

Gosden said: "We're very pleased to have him back on Saturday. It's not a particularly easy race to have him come back in! The field is not only deep but very strong. I don't think we're under any illusions.

"He's had the summer off which has given him time to develop. With his sire they get better with age and time has benefited him enormously.

"He's in great order and is not the type to be ring rusty. He won first-time out as a three-year-old. But we're aware we're coming back in a fantastic renewal of the race."

Betting update

Almanzor was on Monday the top-priced 7-4 favourite for the Group 1 in which Arc winner Found remains among the entries along with Fascinating Rock. Jack Hobbs is a general 16-1.

Gosden said: "I think Almanzor's performance in the Irish Champion was undoubtedly the best of any horse this year. I thought it was quite scintillating with his acceleration. I see him quite clearly as the horse to beat. But with 19 around there if they all stand there ground you are going to need some luck in running."
