Joel target for Stormy

Stormy Antarctic is a possible for the Group Two Shadwell Joel Stakes at Newmarket on September 23.

Stormy Antarctic: Joel Stakes possible

Trained by Ed Walker, Stormy Antarctic is already proven over the Rowley Mile as he ran away with the Group Three Novae Bloodstock Insurance Craven Stakes over this course and distance back in April.
He has since proved himself a genuine Group One performer when finding only Zelzal too strong in the Prix Jean Prat and then finishing seventh, beaten just three lengths by the impressive winner, Ribchester, in the Prix Jacques Le Marois.
Walker said: "Stormy Antarctic is in good order and the Shadwell Joel Stakes would be very tempting for him if the ground came up on the slow side."
"He's a Group 3 winner who has been second in two Group 1s so it seems sensible to try to win a Group 2 with him now."
"His ultimate goal is the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot and I would love to send him there full of confidence on the back of a win. The Joel would fit in really well to that plan and the fact that he won there so impressively in the spring is a positive, but he does have plenty of other options."
"Although Timeform has rated it as his career best performance, we were kind of disappointed with his Marois run. It was a funny old race and we got our tactics wrong – he was up on the speed in a furiously-run race where the first six home all came from well off the pace."

The £100,000 one mile contest is, alongside the Shadwell Rockfel Stakes, one of two Group 2 highlights on the middle day of the three-day Cambridgeshire Meeting. Its initial entry features no less than ten horses that have been successful at or above Group 2 level, plus eight more already victorious in lesser Pattern company.
The entry is headed by the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes hero, Belardo, as well as the recent Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes third, Mutakayyef, and Custom Cut, winner of this race in 2014 and runner-up 12 months ago.
